Portacloy, Co Mayo (also known as Carrowtiege) is about a 4.5 hour drive from Dublin via the M4/N4 to Longford, then the N5 to Swinford. At Swinford take the N26 to Foxford and then on to Ballina. At Ballina take the N59 to Bangor Erris – at Bangor Erris take the  R313 north for approximately 1.5km, then turn right  onto the L1204 – remain on this road for a further 9kms then turn right onto the R314 for 4.2 kms, then left onto the L1023 for 11.5 kms  - then turn right and Portacloy is approximately 2 kms ahead. Note: If travelling this way, Bangor Erris is the last chance to stock up on supplies / fuel before reaching the dive site 30kms away. There is not much accommodation in the area and its about 30km from the nearest decent sized town so you might want to bring a tent..

The beautiful north facing inlet of Portacloy offers clear sheltered waters and easy access via two small piers.  The inlet faces north and so offers protection from the prevailing westerly swells and winds.

Tide, swell and wind forecasts for nearby Lacken Bay are available here.

Keem Bay, also in Mayo is approximately 1.5 hours / 96 kms away via the N59 / R319.

Killcummin Harbour is about 1 hour / 60kms away, take the R314 to get there

Scotch Port, (54.2557, -10.0761), and French Port (54.2411, -10.074) are two shore dive sites  about 40kms away on the Belmullet Peninsula (take the R313 /R314).  Scotch port is particularly sheltered, visibility is usually good here due to the stony sea bed.

If you are heading towards County Sligo, you might like to try diving at Mullaghmore.  which is about 2hrs/160 kms away via the N59 and N4, though this is a very exposed site and only diveable in very calm conditions.

The nearest RNLI station is about 40kms away at Belmullet (097-82072), the Irish Coast Guard can be contacted by phoning 999 or 112.
